The Basics

This section is intended for parents and carers new to the school or considering sending their child to St Cuthbert's. Below you will find an outline of the school day as well as information about school lunches and school uniforms. We hope that this will set you up well to understand the school but if you have any queries please contact the school office directly.

The links below are some of the most requested by parents & carers; please let us know through the school office if there are additional links you would like to see here.

School Day

We start and finish each day with a prayer. The school day starts at 8.50am and finishes at 3.25pm for Key Stage 1 and 3.30 for Key Stage 2.  Registration is from 8.50am to 9.00am.

Assemblies

Assemblies are held 3 times a week with whole school assemblies held on Monday, KS1 on Tuesday and KS2 on Wednesday.  All class assemblies are held on Thursdays which parents are welcome to attend.  Golden assemblies are held approximately once a month where we celebrate children’s achievement in all aspects of school life.

Morning playtimes

Children in KS1 have a morning break from 10.30 – 10.50; KS2 from 10.30 – 10.45.

Lunch

Children in Reception, Y1 and Y2 have lunch 12.00 – 1.10pm.  Y3 – Y6 children begin their break at 12.20pm, finishing at 1.20pm.

Afternoon playtimes:

Younger children have an afternoon playtime.

Reception have break times which are quite flexible.

Drop-off and collection

At the beginning and end of the school day, Key Stage 1 parents are encouraged into the playground. This helps to build up a close relationship between home and school – we want to have good links with all parents.  Key Stage 2 parents are asked to wait just outside the office near the bike/scooter racks.  If normal arrangements have to be altered (eg you are delayed or another person is collecting your child) please let us know.  This avoids any confusion or upset.

Getting to school

To get to and from school, walking is definitely the best option! There are lots of benefits: it’s healthier than travelling by car, it improves the safety of pedestrians and road-users.  If you do need to travel by car, please park wisely, respecting residents and parking regulations, especially just outside the school gate.

Absences

If your child is absent you must contact the school office by 9am. This must be followed up by a letter to the class teacher explaining the absence.

Absences in term time are discouraged however requests for absences can be made by submitting a school absence request form. This must be handed to the school office for approval by the Headteacher.

Medicines and Sun-creams

Medication will be administered by a dedicated member of the office staff.  Parents are requested to complete a medicine form giving details of quantity, type of medicine and how often it is to be administered.  Where a child requires an Epi pen, one is kept in a secure site in the classroom and one in a labelled box in the office with the name and photo of the child attached.

On sunny days the children are encouraged to apply sun cream at home before coming to school.  Children may bring cream to apply themselves and must do so if they are attending swimming.  Staff are not permitted to apply cream for the children.  We also advise the children to wear sun hats in the summer.

School Meals

At St Cuthbert's the children have a choice of bringing packed lunches or having an excellent nutritious 2 course meal at a cost of £2 per day provided by the school.

Packed Lunches

We encourage healthy eating in packed lunches and suggest a selection from the following food groups:

  • Starchy – bread, rolls, pitta or naan bread.
  • Calcium – milk, cheese, yoghurt or fromage frais.
  • Protein – meat, fish, beans or eggs.
  • Portion of fresh fruit, dried or tinned fruit in natural juice, fruit juice.

We do not encourage crisps, cakes, pastries or sweets.

We are a nut free school, so please do not bring any food into school containing nuts or nut derivatives.
