Inclusion & SEND

Special Education Needs and Disabilities

At St Cuthbert's we believe a child centered approach is an integral part in the quality of teaching and learning across the whole curriculum. We are fully committed to offering an inclusive and balanced curriculum that all pupils can participate in.

Our vision of recognising individuality and enabling each other to fulfil our potential through the Gospel values of faith, hope, trust and love is at the heart of our school and our approach to meeting the needs of pupils with SEND.

At St Cuthbert’s we use the definition for SEN and for Disability from the SEND Code of Practice (2014). This states:

SENA child or young person has special educational needs if he or she has a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for him or her. A Learning difficulty is a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age. Special educational provision means educational or training provision that is additional to, or different from, that made generally for others of the same age in mainstream setting England.

DisabilityMany children and young people who have SEN may have a disability under the Equality Act 2010 – that is …’a physical or mental impairment which has a long-term and substantial adverse effect on their ability to carry out normal day to day activities.’

All our teachers see themselves as teachers of SEN and consistently follow the ‘assess, plan, do and review’ approach to making sure they can address and respond to the diversity of needs of each individual.

The School is fully compliant with the DDA (Disability Discrimination Act), please see Accessibility Plan.

Please read our full SEN policy to find out more about how we identify, provide for, assess and challenge our children with SEND.
