As of November 2014, schools must promote British values.  Advice from the DfE is to do so through SMSC, though Ofsted will assess it through the curriculum too.

According to guidance from the DfE, the fundamental British values which schools should promote are:

• Democracy; 
• The rule of law; 
• Individual liberty; 
• Mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith.

At St Cuthbert's we use a range of teaching resources so that we can help children to have a better understanding of the above values.

We aim to ensure that all pupils within the school and have a voice that is listened to. This is demonstrated through our badges of responsibility. 

At St Cuthbert's we promote British values:

• By teachers explaining the meaning of the value;
• By pupils reflecting on the value and what it means to them and their own behaviour;
• By pupils using the value to guide their own actions;
• By staff modelling the value through their own behaviour;
• By ensuring that values are taught implicitly through every aspect of the curriculum;
• Through the work of the school council;
• Through newsletters which explain how school and home can work together to promote positive values.
